King Alfonso X wished "to do good and mercy to Doña Leocadia Fernández" Abbess of the monastery of Toledo", in 1260 granted her the privilege of founding a village of 100 inhabitants in a territory that the nuns owned, called Azoltàn or Acotán. Fourteen years after the aforementioned privilege, the abbess herself issued a town charter on 7 May, which states: "We grant the inheritance of Acotán to all those who wish to populate and live under us and be our vassals..." Thus, with this call, the town was born, under the lordship of the abbess of San Clemente.
In its municipal area there are settlements dating back to the Palaeolithic period, proof of which is the prehistoric dolmen discovered and excavated in the municipal area of the village, this magnificent example of megalithic architecture dating from 4,500 BC. There is also evidence of Visigothic and Muslim settlements.
