CERVANTINE DAYS OF ESQUIVIAS

A CONFERENCE TO COMMEMORATE THE MARRIAGE OF MIGUEL DE CERVANTES TO CATALINA DE SALAZAR Y PALACIOS TO BE HELD IN ESQUIVIAS BETWEEN THE 1ST AND 12TH OF DECEMBER 2024

Since 1979, without interruption, the Jornadas Cervantinas have been held in commemoration of the Wedding of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra with Catalina de Salazar y Palacios, which took place in Esquivias on December 12, 1584.

A FESTIVAL OF REGIONAL TOURIST INTEREST TO PUBLICIZE THE CLOSE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CERVANTES AND THIS TOWN.

An experience that will take the visitor to the House of Miguel de Cervantes in the town of Esquivias, where this famous writer lived for many years with his wife, Catalina de Salazar y Palacios. During his stay in this town he wrote part of Don Quixote, a visit to his house will allow visitors to discover his important legacy for our literary history, a legacy that can be seen by touring the main monuments and spaces of this town with a Cervantine flavor.

LITERARY DAYS TO ENJOY NUMEROUS ACTIVITIES IN HONOR OF THE GREAT SPANISH WRITER, MIGUEL DE CERVANTES SAAVEDRA.

Since the eighteenth century Esquivias is known to exist in the interest to associate in order to make known to the world the close relationship that unites the people with the life and work of Cervantes.

Today, driven by the Cervantine Society of Esquivias and the dedication and enthusiasm of the neighbors, this relationship is remembered through a wide variety of activities: book presentations and readings, staged visits, lectures, plays, concerts, workshops, flea markets or gastronomic tastings.

A PARTY TO UNITE THE ESQUIVIANOS IN THIS LITERARY AND THEATRICAL REPRESENTATION THROUGH THE STREETS AND PUBLIC SPACES OF THE TOWN.

During the days leading up to the event, various activities and popular celebrations are held to commemorate this important event. The main event usually takes place on December 8: the “Staging of the betrothal of Miguel de Cervantes and Catalina de Salazar” is performed in the streets and squares of Esquivias.

Each of the characters involved in the celebration of these nuptials, corresponds to people who were in the place of Esquivias on December 12, 1584: men, women or children, of all state and condition. The representation involves more than 120 neighbors of Esquivias as actors, the music of the time performed by the “Coral Polifónica Catalina de Palacios”, the streets decorated with the typical banners on their balconies, with the sole purpose of honoring Don Miguel de Cervantes and an event that would mark his life: the marriage with the young noblewoman from Esquivias.
