Comarca La Mesa de Ocaña
The Mesa de Ocaña is a large high plain in the northeast of the province of Toledo, which hangs over a hundred metres above the valley of the Tagus. It offers the visitor a rich cultural and architectural heritage that combines traditional architecture with the religious and the profane in a historical evolution that finds its roots in important archaeological sites, a reflection of different eras and cultures that have managed to coexist over the centuries. This region is characterised by the remains of medieval fortresses, military architecture that recalls its intense historical past, and its churches and hermitages, from the military orders and ecclesiastical lordships. Sites such as the Iron Age walled settlement "Plaza de Moros" in Villatobas, "Las esperillas" in Sta. Cruz de la Zarza, etc.
To discover La Mesa de Ocaña is to discover unimagined landscapes that combine the austerity of La Mesa with the freshness of wetlands lost in the landscape, with imposing fountains that speak of the culture of water. Ocaña with its large fountain, designed by Juan de Herrera and so many other architectures, scattered throughout the region, next to which life has passed in the villages, so many works at the foot of their spouts, troughs and washing places.
A land of craftsmanship such as iron and forging, the manufacture of wineskins and wooden cooperage, which enhance the importance of the wines in this region, wines included in the D.O. La Mancha, which accompany the rich cuisine based on game dishes, especially partridge, prepared in its various stews.
