CONSUEGRA INVITES US TO PARTICIPATE IN ITS TRADITIONAL SAFFRON ROSE FESTIVAL FROM OCTOBER 20 TO 29, 2023.
The Fiesta de la Rosa del Azafrán has become, in its own right, a reference in cultural tourism at a national level. It offers three days full of culture, gastronomy, folklore and tradition, intoxicated by the intense aroma of saffron flowers.
Some say that Cervantes found in Consuegra the inspiration for his world famous Giants. True or not, the Calderico hill is crowned by twelve windmills of the sixteenth century, four of which retain the original machinery, these mills are witnesses to the celebration of this important festival.
A FAIR OF TOURIST INTEREST TO REMEMBER AND EXALT THE FOLKLORE OF OUR VILLAGES AND THE CULTURAL ESSENCE OF LA MANCHA.
One of the main events of the Saffron Rose Festival are the two folklore shows organized by the Cultural Association “Rosa del Azafrán”. On Saturday, between Molinos de Viento and prior to the Molienda de la Paz; and on Sunday, in the Plaza de España, in a show that brings together in Consuegra the most representative groups of Choirs and Dances at national level.
THE HARVESTING OF SAFFRON AS A FESTIVAL TO LEARN ABOUT THE WHOLE PROCESS OF CULTIVATION, HARVESTING, PEELING AND ROASTING OF THE SAFFRON KNOWN AS “RED GOLD OF LA MANCHA”.
Due to its location, soil and climate, the red gold of La Mancha finds in Consuegra one of the most favorable areas for its growth. Its cultivation is a slow and laborious process that, except for a few innovations, is carried out exactly as it was a hundred years ago. During the festival we will be able to learn about the entire process of cultivation, harvesting, harvesting and roasting of the most valued spice in the world.
A FESTIVAL OF TOURIST INTEREST AROUND A PRODUCT OF DIFFERENTIATED QUALITY, SUCH AS SAFFRON FROM LA MANCHA, TOGETHER WITH ITS FOLKLORE AND MOST POPULAR TRADITIONS.
The reason for choosing saffron as a motif around which to celebrate a festival is due to three fundamental causes:
- First, it is a unique product within the Spanish agricultural landscape, since 90% of production is concentrated in La Mancha, and is therefore associated with the natural area where it is produced, with all its cultural connotations, so it could be considered as a sign of identity of the region.
- Secondly, it is by right associated with quality, and this is not only in the domestic sphere, but already ancient cultures, such as the Sumerians or Akkadians, considered it as a luxury item.
- Thirdly, it is one of the products, if not the only one, that Castilla – La Mancha can claim to have in its territory as the best in the world.
