A municipality nestled on the slopes of the Montes de Toledo that has been populated by Romans, Visigoths and Arabs since the 4th century and whose name comes from the ancient Roman settlement of "ISPINUM". It was in the 16th century that Espinoso became independent as a town and began to be administered as such, hence the presence of the jurisdictional roll made of stone.

Territory located between mountains that give it an exceptional landscape value where the visitor can observe the Mediterranean holm oak forest, which allows the hiker to enjoy several hiking routes through the surrounding mountain ranges, little known and practically untouched. In autumn it becomes a mycological paradise due to its biodiversity, although the most important species are the highly prized chanterelles and monkshoods (the latter are not edible).

A traditional village where visitors can enjoy the cultural heritage of its urban area and public spaces such as the old washing places, where women used to go to wash their clothes, a trade that has now disappeared.

What to see?

Church of Santiago Apóstol (16th c.)

It was built in the 16th century on the site of a smaller church of which hardly any remains are preserved. It has undergone several alterations, making it an eclectic church with a mixture of different architectural styles. Its bell tower had to be demolished at the beginning of the 20th century due to the danger of collapse and a new one in neo-Mudejar style was built in its place.

Rollo Juridiscional (16th c.)

It is the oldest monument preserved in Espinoso, located in the square of the same name, and was built in the 16th century. Popular history depicts the scrolls as instruments of torture or death. Although they were sometimes used to expose convicts to public shame, the reality is that they were erected on reaching Villa status.

Hermitage of Ntra. Sra. de los Remedios (XVII c.)

Built in the mid-17th century in honour of the patron saint of the municipality. At the beginning it had a belfry for the bells that has not been preserved with the passing of time. With a Latin cross plan with very short arms, it is a fine example of the popular architecture of the area.

Town Hall (20th c.)

Built in 1945 with a curved tile roof, stone façade with lime mortar, brick balcony openings with painted cement mortar rendering.

Municipal laundry (20th c.)

It was built at the beginning of the 20th century (1904) and its water came from the fountain in the Plaza Mayor, when there was no running water in the houses. In addition to its own function, the laundry served as a communication centre, a place where the most important local news and commentaries were transmitted. The enclosure has a water inlet at the top and an overflow outlet at the bottom, and there is a pool of flowing water along the entire length, lined with granite stone on both sides, and with an inward slope in the form of a washbasin. The original washhouse was not protected by any construction. Subsequently, a brick wall was built and a three-sided roof, covered with curved Arabic tiles on wooden beams, which gave it a sense of privacy and protection, with a structure of six brick pilasters covered and painted with lime, with the rest of the walls free except for a perimeter plinth.
