The name comes from a small forge, ferrezuela or herreruela. This is attested to by its ancient name of Ferreruela, as early as 1156.

The greatest cultural value of Herreruela de Oropesa is the church dedicated to San Ildefonso, originally built in the 16th century with a single nave, and which was enlarged in the mid-20th century. In contrast to this ancient building, we find the modern and striking hermitage of San Isidro, whose construction has involved the collaboration of carpenters, painters, masons, architects and a large part of the local population.

Through the streets of the old part of Herreruela de Oropesa we can find the Way of the Cross, one of the most valuable in the region, ending the Calvary on a small hill nearby, forming a painted ensemble.

What to see?

Church of San Ildefonso (16th c.)

The parish church of San Ildefonso dates from the 16th century, although it has elements from later periods. Its cruciform ground plan has an atrium to the south and a belfry with three openings on its main façade. The masonry is made of stone and the sloping roof is finished with curved ceramic tiles.

Town Hall (20th c.)

Built in 1907, this two-storey building is reminiscent of traditional architecture. The lower one is made of masonry and the upper one uses a brick masonry cladding on the outside. The roof is hipped.

Hermitage of San Isidro

Under the patronage of San Isidro, this modern hermitage is the result of the joint work of carpenters, masons, painters and architects, and the collaboration of a large part of the population. Although there was an earlier one, it was decided to build this hermitage adapted to the wall of a rock using wood from some old chestnut tree cuttings.
