This land has been inhabited since Neolithic and Chalcolithic times, as demonstrated by the archaeological remains found in the "Valle de las Higueras" archaeological site. Tomaría entidad en época musulmana cuando empieza a definirse su casco urbano hasta convertirse en villa en el siglo XV, erigiéndose su rollo de justicia, y construyéndose sus principales monumentos como la iglesia de San Juan Bautista, de Pedro de Velasco pero con trazas del famoso Alonso de Covarrubias, o la ermita de Santa Eugenia del siglo XVII.
Municipio con un rico entorno natural donde los aficionados a la ornitología tienen su mejor recurso al encontrarse esta zona incluida como “zona de especial protección de aves”, a pesar de ser un territorio más bien llano, con alguna colina como la que ocupa esta localidad, encontramos pequeños bosques de encinas y coscojas en el valle del Concejo. Diversos arroyos surcan sus tierras y diferentes caminos las atraviesan lo que permite al senderista disfrutar de un paisaje de contrastes donde puede intercambiar impresiones con los peregrinos que se cruza al recorrer el camino de Santiago proveniente del sureste por este municipio. What to see?
In Gothic-Renaissance style with Baroque overtones, built in the 16th century but with additions in later centuries. It is a single-nave church without a distinct apse, with a raised choir and a bell tower. The roof of the main chapel has a ribbed ceiling with numerous ribs, the arches of which rest on Renaissance-style corbels. This chapel is isolated from the nave by a semicircular triumphal arch. The nave consists of three bays with semicircular arches ending in a barrel vault with lunettes. The altarpiece of the main altar is Baroque and consists of a single body with three aisles and an attic above the central one, which contains a painting of the baptism of Christ. The parish church also houses a casket with a relic of Saint Eugenia.
Of popular style and rectangular floor plan with an entrance door on the long side of the rectangle, consisting of a simple recess with a segmental arch.
Dating from the 4th and 3rd millennium BC, it is a Neolithic and Cacolithic settlement in which collective burials, bell-shaped vessels, metal and sumptuous ornaments were found, along with plain pottery and some pieces of bone.
Erected in the 16th century, it consists of a column with a monolithic shaft, standing on three tiers. The coat of arms of the Ayalas is sculpted on each of its faces. It is topped by a round cornice and a pavilion with balustraded colonnettes.
