This town has been inhabited since ancient times and has a great historical legacy for this municipality and for the province of Toledo. Proof of this are the Bronze Age archaeological sites "Los Castillos" and "Arroyo Manzanas", the latter declared B.I.C. in 1993, which was populated until pre-Roman times by Vetons, hence the boars found in its territory.

Roman stelae confirm that this culture also inhabited these lands, which would later be crossed by Visigoths and Muslims until the 14th century, when this locality emerged as a fusion of several districts existing in the municipality, becoming an entity in the 15th century, when the construction of its church began.

Las Herencias is not only cultural but also has a rich natural heritage bathed by the waters of the Tagus River, which form a large meander and with it a spectacular natural area ideal for nature lovers and birdwatchers, since it is a Special Protection Area for Birds where the Bancanales de Eneas and the Desfiladero del Barranco de los Castillos, an Area of Special Landscape Interest, stand out. In this municipality, visitors can enjoy various water activities, fishing, bird watching and hiking, among others.

What to see?

Church of the Purísima Concepción (15th c.)

The building was built in the 15th century in masonry and brick, with a single nave and a large belfry with three openings on the façade.

Virgen de la Paz Hermitage

Small building with a single nave of popular construction surrounded by abundant trees.

Cerro de los Castillos

Bronze Age archaeological site with an ancient site of an Arab fortress. It is located on the banks of the river, to the south-east-west of the present town centre.

Archaeological Site of Cerro Manzanas

Its beginnings date back to the Bronze Age and its settlement lasted until pre-Roman times, with the Vetons being the last people to inhabit it. Due to its archaeological importance, despite being scarcely excavated, it is an important archaeological site that was declared a B.I.C. site in 1993.

Ecological interest area "Bancanales de Eneas"

It is located along the course of the Tagus River, to the southeast of the village, in the last meander of its course before reaching Los Castillos. Apart from the importance of the bulrush terraces, which form one of the most classic river ecosystems and provide a habitat for various species of waterfowl such as mallards, bulrush was the basis of traditional trades in Las Herencias, such as basketry and ashlar making, in which it was used as a raw material. Its proximity to the village and its setting within the area of Los Castillos makes it, with the appropriate precautions, of great value as an educational recreational area.

Area of Ecological and Landscape Interest "Desfiladero del Barranco de los Castillos"

In the Los Castillos area, following the river bank, on the other side of the leisure facilities and the jetty, you enter a gorge in the form of a breach created by landslides and erosion caused by runoff from the Los Castillos hill.
