San Pablo de los Montes celebrates the Fiesta de la Vaca

SAN PABLO DE LOS MONTES ENJOYSDURING 25 JANUARY OF ITS MOST PECULIAR AND ETHNOGRAPHIC FESTIVAL TO HIGHLIGHT THE CHARACTER AND PERSONALITY OF THE SAMPABLES

The Feast of the Cow commemorates the conversion of St. Paul, patron saint of the town. It celebrates various events full of uniqueness and idiosyncrasy where the religious and profane character is mixed.

AN ANCESTRAL FESTIVAL TO SHOW THE BEING AND IDENTITY OF THE NEIGHBORS OF SAN PABLO DE LOS MONTES

In the Fiesta de la Vaca each fifth has a specific mission to accomplish, highlighting such peculiar characters as the CowboyHe is dressed in a short suit and in his hand, simulating the head of the cow, he carries a long stick topped, at one end, by horns adorned with colored ribbons. The Madre Cochina is a fifth disguised as a woman, who assaults the young women trying to lift their skirts, or the Escobones, who is in charge of cleaning the supposed cow excrement. The rest of the group embodies the cowbell ringers who carry bells hanging from their waists with which they make a great commotion.

A FESTIVITY OF REGIONAL TOURIST INTEREST THAT STARTS A FEW DAYS BEFORE, BEING THE NIGHT OF JANUARY 24TH THE STARTING POINT OF THIS DEEP-ROOTED CELEBRATION.

This celebration begins days before the festivity with the review that is the announcement of the proximity of the party, leaving the fifth of that year to “run” the streets of the municipality at night ringing cowbells. Days later the “luminaria” is celebrated, the night before the Day of the Cow; it is a big bonfire that is lit by the “quintos” with firewood that they have collected during the day for the attendees to warm up; this evening is enlivened with chocolate and later dancing.

A PROFANO-RELIGIOUS FESTIVAL COMPLETED WITH LUDIC EVENTS FOR THE ENJOYMENT OF NEIGHBOURS AND VISITORS

On January 25, in this original festival, the “quintos”, dressed in typical attire, “run” the strangers holding them by the arms and pricking them with “la vaca” (a pair of cow horns attached to a stick or pole and adorned with ribbons and flowers) simulating that the stranger is gored by a cow while the “quintos” ring incessantly the cowbells around them, forming a great commotion, interrupting on several occasions the procession that goes through the streets with the images of San Pablo and San Sebastián. When they arrive at the town hall, they invite him to tostones and lemonade and repeat the operation with another stranger or neighbor.

Before it ends, they hide Mother Piggy so that the married couple cannot find her. Once the procession is over and while the people are at mass, the married couples, to whom the cow has been left, go to look for the Mother PigThe duration of the mass is the time they have to find it, if they do it, they are the ones in charge of “running the cow, if not, it will be the fifths who will do it.
