In the heart of Castilla-La Mancha, the province of Toledo offers a rich cultural, natural and gastronomic heritage that reflects centuries of history. Within the framework of the Tourism Sustainability Plan for the Toledo Mountains promoted by the Toledo Tourist Board, we highlight three routes that reflect part of the identity of this unique region. From the vestiges of the Visigothic Kingdom to the traditions of La Mancha, passing through the imposing La Mancha castles and mills that evoke the Middle Ages.
Ruta Visigoda: El Reino de Toledo
This route begins in Toledo, the ancient Visigothic capital, and takes in key sites such as Guadamur, with the site of Guarrazar, and San Martín de Montalbán, where the church of Santa María de Melque surrounded by a unique natural environment. Tourists can explore the necropolis of Menasalbas, Las Ventas with Peña Aguilera and Hontanar, and ends in Orgaz, with its Museum of Visigoth Art and the site of Los Hitos.
Route through La Mancha Toledana: In the Land of Don Quixote
This cultural route begins in Consuegra, with its emblematic windmills and castle. It includes the region of Madridejos, famous for its Saffron Museum, and Camuñas, known for the Corpus Christi Festival. The natural surroundings include the lagoons of Villafranca de los Caballeros and Miguel Esteban before reaching El Toboso, home of Dulcinea, and ending in Villacañas, with its traditional silos and its museum of naïve art.
Route between Castles and Mills: A Medieval Journey
From the castle of Orgaz to the windmills of Los Yébenes, this route takes you through fortresses and landscapes that evoke the Middle Ages. Tourists can enjoy the views from the Cerro Calderico in Consuegra, explore the heritage of Madridejos and El Romeral, and visit the baroque main square of Tembleque. It ends in Mora, with the Peñas Negras castle, and in Almonacid de Toledo, where the views from its fortress are a real tourist attraction.
