The province of Toledo has an important cultural legacy from the Visigothic period that allows us to discover the importance of Toledo as the capital of the Visigothic Kingdom. In this route the visitor will be able to know and discover how these barbarian peoples that expelled the Romans and unified the coexistence in the Peninsula, between the IV and VII centuries of our era, have transmitted us a material and immaterial heritage of great value for our history. Part of this heritage is located in the province of Toledo and for this reason, the traveler through this route will be able to deepen and enjoy this rich culture that settled the origins of Europe.
In this itinerary you will discover the vestiges of the Visigothic Toledo, a legendary city that thanks to archaeological excavations and the important role of archaeologists and historians we can outline the history of the capital of this important kingdom and learn what was the Regias Sedes Toletana. Leaving Toledo towards the south we will find Guadamur, known worldwide for the discovery of the votive crowns of the Gothic kings in the famous archaeological site of Guarrazar, where the traveller can visit this site and learn more about the importance of this discovery. The route continues to the south where one of the Visigothic jewels of the province of Toledo awaits us, the church of Santa María de Melque in San Martín de Montalbán,
a stupendous monastic complex from the 7th-8th century in a perfect state of conservation that has a Visigothic interpretation centre and an exhibition hall. In the surrounding area, visitors will find the SL- TO 01 hiking route of approximately 45 minutes where they can get to know the ecosystem that surrounds this beautiful monument. The journey takes us into the mountains of Toledo where the visitor will discover the necropolis excavated in the rock from the Visigothic period, highlighting the complexes of Hontanar, Menasalbas and Las Ventas con Peña Aguilera. In them you can observe the rich natural heritage that surrounds these necropolises and take advantage of the various hiking opportunities offered by these tourist destinations in the heart of this region as the route PR- TO 36. From Las Ventas with Peña Aguilera the itinerary continues towards the town of Sonseca and its hamlet of Casalgordo to walk its Visigothic past PR- TO 17, which will take us to the ruins of the church of San Pedro de La Mata. This tour ends in the medieval village of OrgazThe main tourist destination in the province due to its importance over the centuries in its district of Arisgotas two important enclaves about this culture, the Visigoth Art Museum and the important and recently excavated archaeological site of Los Hitos, which is included in the PR- TO 18 hiking route.
Through this itinerary focused mainly on the Visigothic Kingdom of Toledo, the visitor can discover a great historical legacy that is complemented by tourist services and an important cultural and natural heritage offered by the towns included in this route that will not leave the traveler indifferent.
