The ravines of Burujón

An advertisement landscape

In the municipality of Burujón, a town in Toledo located some 30 km from the capital, we can find one of the most beautiful, impressive and surprising natural sites in the province.

The ravines of Burujón are spectacular clayey cliffs that have been formed by the erosion of the wind and the waters of the Tagus over sediments dating back 25 million years.

These reddish clayey gullies are approximately one kilometre long and reach more than a hundred metres in height at some points, particularly at their highest peak, which is known as the "peak of Cambron".

In addition, inside the ravines is the Castrejón reservoir, which confers an even greater beauty to this spot and makes it a refuge for numerous bird species.

The richness of this privileged enclave can be appreciated through the "senda ecológica de las Barrancas", which has several viewpoints from which you can contemplate these spectacular cliffs, as well as their flora and fauna.

When talking about its flora, we must refer to the two types of vegetation that grow in the ravines: riparian vegetation, including belts of tall reeds, bulrushes, blackberries, willows and tamarisks; and Mediterranean vegetation, including thyme, rosemary, almond trees, ball broom and, above all, ephedra and juniper.

As for the fauna, there is a wide variety of species, including rabbits, hares, partridges...

However, the most striking feature of the fauna of the ravines is the large number of birds that can be found in the area: storks, ducks, ducks, herons, kingfishers, cormorants...

In addition, as the area is dominated by Mediterranean scrubland, the natural site of the ravines provides a habitat for numerous endangered bird species, such as the peregrine falcon, Iberian imperial eagle, Bonelli's eagle, marsh harrier, eagle owl, barn owl, barn owl, kestrel, black vulture...

All these factors contribute to making the Burujón ravines one of the most beautiful spots in the province of Toledo. Although, at the same time, it is one of the most unknown places, since for a long time its location has gone unnoticed by most visitors, mainly due to the unexpectedness of finding this marvellous and impressive place at the end of a track that goes deep into farmland.

To access Las Barrancas it is necessary to take a dirt track that is located at kilometre point 26 of the CM - 4000, the road that goes from Toledo towards Talavera de la Reina passing through La Puebla de Montalbán. Specifically, coming from Toledo, we will find the track on the left hand side, just a few metres before the Burujón crossroads.

Once you have found the track, the information panels located along the Barrancas ecological path will lead you to this natural spot of singular beauty.
