A 17th CENTURY TRADITION TO TAKE PLACE IN VALDEVERDEJA ON FEBRUARY 10 AND 11, 2024
The Carnival of Souls or Soldadesca of Valdeverdeja is celebrated on Carnival Sunday. Days before, the preparations begin with the request of culinary ingredients by the people to make the feast with the frying pan fruits. Prior to this, the Children’s and Adults’ Animeros Squads and the rehearsal of the Soldadesca Dance are formed.
A RELIGIOUS AND ETHNOGRAPHIC FESTIVITY THAT REVOLVES AROUND THE DANCE OF THE SOLDADESCA WHOSE PROTAGONISM CORRESPONDS TO THE ESCUADRA DE ANIMAS.
On Carnival Sunday the Escuadra de Ánimas, with the Animeros couples that will participate in the Soldadesca Dance, concentrates in the Plaza Mayor of the town with the civil and religious authorities to go to the parish church.
The Escuadra is composed of the Tamborilero who leads the procession playing redobles; the Abanderado who performs the games with the flag and the Animeros and Animeras who will be in charge of performing the dance called “TO TO TÓN” later on. Some jotas extremeñas or manchegas are also danced, giving more joy and movement if possible.
